Topic Sentence: In the documentary Bully by Lee Hersh, Hersh correctly displays the impact of bullying on an everyday lifestyle because it can have extreme effects and lead to violent actions.
Set up: It’s impossible to know when someone is reaching their breaking point until it’s too late. Tyler Long, a 17 year old boy, killed himself after years of torment and harassment. His parents held a town meeting after his death to spread awareness.
Evidence: At this meeting Tyler’s classmate said “It’s a shame Tyler had to do what he did to get anyone to notice.”
Explanation: Tyler had reached his breaking point but no one knew until it was too late and he had already committed suicide. Other kids who have been bullied know the struggles that can come with it. But Tyler’s death brought immediate attention to each child’s individual breaking point.
Counterclaim: However, one could argue that Hersh is over exaggerating the extremities of bullying and that it cannot be stopped.
Evidence: After Tyler’s death, his parents approached the school and spoke with the principle and members of the board on multiple occasions. One of the administrators that they spoke with denied all responsibility for what happened to Tyler. She told them, “We can’t stop kids from saying bad things.”
Explanation: The administrator is explaining that bullying cannot be completely stopped by adults and that kids should take action by standing up for themselves.
Rebuttal: At a first glance it would seem that no action should be taken towards bullying because it goes unnoticed and the kids should stand up for themselves. However it is more complicated than that. Tyler’s administrator may be correct but that doesn’t mean actions shouldn’t be taken to prevent future violence kids commit against themselves. While the school environment cannot be changed completely it should be changed just enough to keep these kids safe and from reaching their breaking point. Conclusion: Bully by Lee Hersh obviously shows a direct connection between bullied kids and childhood violence, especially when children reach their breaking points.
